Back to Communities

Minden, the Douglas County seat, is a quiet, friendly community set in the heart of the Carson Valley. Minden began as a planned community, and is in fact unique among Silver State towns and possibly even the nation, as it was mapped and defined on the ground before a single building was built.

The town was established by the Dangberg family in 1906 and named after a city near the patriarch’s birthplace, Minden, Germany. Although newer subdivisions have affected the town’s symmetry, charm and pride are still evident. Visitors strolling through Minden today will pass stately century-old homes and historic brick building’s that give’s the sense of history, quiet country living, and peace; all the while keeping up with the feel of today’s civilized elite lifestyles. Minden offers a nice selection of local restaurants, antique stores, gift shops and art galleries to peruse.

Minden Park, home to the infamous bandstand/gazebo, host’s musical concerts during the summer months, a must for locals and tourists alike. Be sure to join in the annual lighting of the Gazebo to kick off the holiday season. In town, the summer months mean farmers’ markets, chili cook-offs and street festivals with local and traveling artists, a range of interesting vendors, food booths and live music.

Minden serves as an ideal base for outdoor recreation. Not only is it close to the playground that is Lake Tahoe, there’s no shortage of golf, biking and hiking in the area. Four of the Divine Nine golf courses are just minutes away, hikers and horseback riders can follow the Faye-Luther Canyon Trail that begins just off State Route 206, and bikers routinely race along Foothill and Jacks Valley roads. After a day of outdoor activity, you can relax at the Carson Valley Inn, have dinner at the Minden Food Company in downtown or choose from a number of American, Asian, Mexican and Italian eateries. Whether you and your family are outdoor enthusiasts or enjoy quiet serenity, you’ll find it all right here.
